The UIC Craniofacial Center is the crown jewel of UIC Plastic Surgery. The UIC Cleft Team was established in 1949 by Dr. Sam Pruzansky and is one of the longest continuously running Cleft Palate / Craniofacial Centers in the USA.
The CFC houses in a single physical location an entire team of interdisciplinary professionals dedicated to the care of congenital and acquired facial differences in individuals from birth to all ages into adulthood. Presenting clinical cases include primary and secondary cleft lip and palate, hemifacial microsomia, atypical facial clefting, synostosis and positional molding, post cancer resection reconstruction and dental implants. The CFC sees all pediatric patients for the Division including birthmarks, vascular lesions, prominent ears, injuries, burns and developmental breast problems.
Working at the CFC and on our faculty, you will find pediatricians, pediatric dentists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, anaplastologists, health psychologists, speech pathologists, audiologists and virtual surgical researchers. A full virtual surgical lab is housed at the CFC which allows residents to participate and run virtual surgical planning for orthognathic, free fibula reconstructions and synostosis surgeries. A fabricating lab with 3D scanning and printing capabilities allows our residents to fabricate splints for both elective orthognathic and trauma maxillofacial cases.
