University of Illinois Hospital and Healthcare
At UI Health, the residents are exposed to elective plastic surgery, from the straight forward to the extremely complex, from neonates to adults and from esthetics to reconstruction. UI Healthcare complex houses a 485 bed hospital with a level 2 trauma center and a level 1 NICU, the UIC Craniofacial Center, the Outpatient Care Center (OCC) and the Surgical Innovation and Teaching Laboratory (SITL), opened in late 2020. The UIH experience provides in depth exposure to breast surgery (reconstruction, non-cancer and transgender), pediatric cleft and craniosynostosis surgery, elective maxillofacial surgery and post bariatric body contouring. Microsurgery cases center on complex head/neck and breast reconstruction. In addition to preoperative and postoperative clinics, the OCC provides an office based operating experience for minor and esthetic cases. We use the SITL for both hands on simulation workshops and for research purposes. A new outpatient surgery building with expanded outpatient operating rooms is under construction, with a scheduled opening date of Summer, 2022. UI Health serves the most complex surgical cases and an underrepresented minority population requiring a higher number of public aid services.
